Is healthcare actually cheaper in Canada than the US?
Lucas Wennersten, CFA, CFP® (Canada), CFP® (USA) shares his real numbers after raising four children across both systems.
In the US, his family paid about $2,000 per month in Affordable Care Act premiums, plus a deductible around $13,000 to $14,000. That is before factoring in childbirth costs.
In Canada, hospital care was fully covered. The only out of pocket cost was about $400 for a private hospital room in downtown Toronto, plus included midwife home visits.
Higher taxes. Lower insurance premiums. Different financial tradeoffs.
If you are a US expat family or considering relocating to Canada, understanding total healthcare costs is essential for cross border financial planning.
