(0:00) So let's talk about kind of this legislative shift here, right? So this came through under Biden, (0:07) right before the administration changed in early January 2025. So the U.S. Congress passed the (0:13) legislation to repeal WEP, which is a huge victory for fairness of the social security system. (0:21) The repeal didn't come out of nowhere.
This is something that expat advocacy groups, (0:26) financial experts, and individual lobby groups have been proposing and fighting for (0:33) for years. They always argued that WEP disproportionately penalized those who (0:38) worked abroad or in jobs that didn't pay into social security. So by removing the provision, (0:44) Congress has aimed to create a more equitable system that accurately reflects someone's (0:51) actual contributions.
