Manouchka: Hey Boss Mama, welcome back to the show. I’m your host, Manouchka Elefant, marketing coach and fellow mom entrepreneur.

I’m so excited for today’s episode because we’re talking about something that I know so many of us struggle with, especially if you identify as a bit of a perfectionist. And that is imperfect action, the idea that you do not have to have it all figured out, you do not have to make it perfect, and you do not need the best version of something before you put it out into the world.

Now, if you’re already feeling called out, don’t worry. I’m right there with you. I’m a recovering perfectionist myself, and honestly, I still catch myself falling into the trap.

But here’s what I’ve learned. Perfectionism is one of the biggest things keeping us stuck.

So today, we’re going to talk about why perfectionism is secretly procrastination in disguise, my own struggles with perfectionism and how I overcame them, the simple mindset shift that will get you unstuck, and my go-to strategy for taking action even when it feels messy.

So if you’ve been delaying a project, holding yourself back, or getting lost in the details, this episode is for you.

Manouchka: So here’s the thing. Perfectionism looks productive, but it’s not.

And let’s be real for a second. How many times have you told yourself, “I just want to get it right before I put it out there,” or “I need to tweak a few more things before I launch,” or even “I’ll start when I have more time to make it perfect”?

I get it. I really do.

Perfectionism feels like a high standard. It feels like we’re being responsible and detail-oriented. But the truth is, perfectionism is actually procrastination dressed up in a fancy outfit. It’s keeping you from making progress.

And as I mentioned, I’m also a recovering perfectionist. Let me tell you how I have experienced the perfectionism trap.

When I decided to launch the Hey Boss Mama podcast, I was so excited. I had my mission, I had my vision, but it still took me six months to hit publish.

Why?

Because I was convinced I needed to do a video podcast. Everyone says video is the future. All the platforms are pushing video content. It just made sense on paper, right?

But in reality, editing video is so much more work. I had zero time to do it with a baby at home. And frankly, I was using it as an excuse to avoid just starting.

Then I realized, wait, what actually matters here? Is my goal to help mompreneurs and have real, impactful conversations? Or is it to have a picture-perfect, ultra-produced video podcast?

That’s when I let it go. And guess what? The podcast is thriving without video.

And here’s another great example of my struggle with perfectionism.

Let’s talk about Instagram.

When I was running my marketing agency, I was creating thousands of posts every year for my clients. But my own page? Nothing.

Why?

Because I was stuck in perfectionism paralysis. Every post had to be just right. I overthought every detail. Let me tell you, I spent so many hours on Canva creating tiny, tiny tweaks, getting the font perfectly sized or that graphic perfectly placed and colored and whatever.

And because it wasn’t perfect, I just didn’t post.

Meanwhile, I watched other entrepreneurs grow their businesses with way messier content simply because they were showing up.

So when I launched Hey Boss Mama, I made a decision. My mission was more important than perfection.

Instead of obsessing over details, I focused on fun, connection, and creativity.

And you know what? Not only am I enjoying social media way more, but my content performs better.

Here’s a marketing tip. About 4 percent of your Instagram followers will see your post organically, and its lifespan is roughly 24 hours. So why are we wasting time making it perfect?

Done is better than perfect.

Manouchka: Now let me ask you, what’s the real reason we’re hiding behind perfectionism?

Here’s the uncomfortable truth. Perfectionism is not about being detail-oriented. It’s about fear. Fear of failing, fear of what people might think, fear of putting ourselves out there.

We tell ourselves it has to be perfect before we start, but really, we’re just scared to start. It’s our lack of confidence that’s taking over.

And the only way to beat that fear? Take messy, imperfect action.

Action creates confidence.

So your first podcast episode? Not perfect. Publish it anyway.

Your first Instagram post? Not your best post.

Your next ten Instagram posts? They won’t be perfect. Post them anyway.

Your product launch? It’s going to be messy as hell. Just do it anyway.

Because every time you take action, you get better. You learn, you grow, and you develop yourself as an entrepreneur.

Manouchka: So how do we escape perfectionism paralysis? How do we break free?

If perfectionism has you stuck, here are the two best things you can do today.

One, create a clear plan so you know your next step.

Two, keep it simple. Get fancy later.

I know from experience that having a structured roadmap removes the guesswork and actually helps you execute.

Sometimes all you need to do is start with a minimum viable product, or MVP. It’s a simple first version that you can improve as you go.

For example, I use a project plan for every part of my business, my coaching, my podcast, my masterminds. I know what my objectives are, and I know how to get there. That plan helps me move forward without overthinking every detail.

Another example is my website. When I built it, I knew I wanted a place to showcase what I was creating. But back in September last year, I didn’t even have the full vision for Hey Boss Mama. At first it was just going to be a podcast.

But I needed a website quickly to give context when I was inviting guests for interviews. So I created a basic version, an MVP.

Now I’ve improved it, expanded it, and continued to tweak it as Hey Boss Mama evolves. But I never would have reached this point if I had waited for it to be perfect before launching.

So if you’re feeling stuck, ask yourself: do I really need more time, or do I just need a plan?

Then take the next messy, imperfect step forward.

Manouchka: So Boss Mama, the world doesn’t need your perfect ideas. It needs your action.

That course you want to launch? Start.

That Instagram Reel you’re scared to publish? Just get it done.

That business idea you keep overthinking? Give it a go. Try it.

Imperfect action is more important than no action.

So here’s your challenge from me to you.

Number one, pick one thing you’ve been holding back on.

Number two, take messy action on it this week.

And number three, DM me on Instagram and tell me all about it. I want to be there to cheer you on.

So there you have it, Boss Mama. Go and take some messy action.

And if you enjoyed this episode, share it with another mom entrepreneur who could use this reminder. Don’t forget to hit follow and leave a review. It helps so much.

Until next time, Boss Mama, you’ve got this.
