Manouchka: Hey Boss Mama. Welcome back to the show. This is the space where we explore building a business you love, raising your family, and creating a life that works for you. I’m your host, Manouchka Elefant, marketing coach and fellow mom entrepreneur.

Let me ask you something. Have you ever felt like you’re juggling your business, your kids, your home, your inbox, and every single thing feels urgent all at once? Like you’re holding everything together until suddenly it feels like everything is on the verge of falling apart.

Today, I’m going to help you shift out of that feeling, and fast.

In this episode, we’re answering the question: how can mom entrepreneurs regain control when everything feels overwhelming?

I’ll share how I personally handle those moments, the hidden reasons why overwhelm builds up, and spoiler alert, it’s not just about being busy, and five actionable ways to bring clarity, calm, and focus back into your life and business starting today.

So if you’ve been feeling stretched too thin, stay with me. This one’s for you.

Manouchka: Here’s the thing. I used to believe I knew what stress felt like. Deadlines in my corporate job? Check. Clients with last-minute requests? Check. A boss breathing down my neck? Been there, done that.

Then I became an entrepreneur and I thought, okay, this is next level now. Pushing myself to go above and beyond for my clients, managing it all solo, I wore that like a badge of honor.

But nothing prepared me for what happened when I became a mom.

It’s like the mental load just multiplied overnight.

Suddenly I wasn’t just thinking about business tasks or clients. I was thinking about my baby, the house, the groceries, the unpaid bills, what are we cooking tonight, the diapers I need to restock, the Instagram comments I’ve left unanswered.

And at first I told myself, it’s fine, I’ve got this.

Until one day it wasn’t fine. One teeny additional task, one new plate that I added to my already spinning set, and everything felt wobbly.

I remember sitting on the floor next to my bed, tears running down my face, and not even knowing which thing pushed me over the edge. My body just needed a release.

We choose entrepreneurship sometimes out of necessity, but also because of our ambitions and a quest for freedom and flexibility. Obviously, we knew it wouldn’t always be easy, but no one prepares you for the sheer level of overwhelm that can just creep in on you.

And this, Boss Mama, is what so many of us face. That creeping overwhelm where business, motherhood, and life all blur together, and the to-do list never stops. Every item feels urgent, and everything feels like it has to be done now.

But here’s the truth. Overwhelm isn’t just about a packed schedule. It’s about how our minds start treating everything as equally important, and that’s where we lose control.

So let’s slow down. Let’s take a breath, literally. Let’s actually define what overwhelm is, what it does to us if we ignore it, and most importantly, how to shift out of it fast.

When we let overwhelm linger, it doesn’t just stay confined to our minds. It seeps into every facet of our lives.

Physically, you might notice constant fatigue, tension, headaches, or even burnout creeping in.

Emotionally, irritability, anxiety, frustration, guilt, all of it rises to the surface.

And professionally, creativity tanks, your decision-making feels foggy, and you start spinning your wheels instead of making meaningful progress.

And frankly, for me, overwhelm doesn’t just show up as exhaustion. It affects how I show up for the people I love. I catch myself getting short with my partner or snapping at my child over something small, and that’s when I know I’ve crossed the line.

Because most concerning is that overwhelm starts pulling us away from the things we love most. We’re less present with our kids, our partners, and even ourselves. And so the business and family that we’re dreaming of, they feel like they’re draining us instead of fueling us. And that has to stop.

I’d like to share two personal moments that really created a mindset shift for me.

One moment that really stands out is when I tried to launch a webinar in just five days flat. Yes, five days to create the content, design the slides, write the emails, promote it, and show up live.

Was it exciting? Oh yes.

Did I make it happen? Yes, I did.

But it left me drained. I was tense, impatient, and honestly, I did it to myself. It was a clear reminder that I get to choose how I build my business, and I’m also the one who can decide when to slow down.

Another example, postponing my mastermind by a month. It felt risky at first, but it allowed me to show up fully for my community and deliver a much better experience. Sometimes stepping back is the most powerful move we can make.

So what helped me shift? Well, I started practicing what I now call pause and reframe.

Whenever I feel that tightness in my chest, or the mental spiral of overwhelm starting, I ask myself:

One, how serious is this really? And most of the time, it’s not an emergency.

Two, what’s essential here? What’s the one thing that really matters right now?

And three, how can I let this be easier?

Sometimes the solution is as simple as simplifying the project, delaying a task, or dropping the need for it to be perfect.

And here’s something that has really stuck with me lately. Overwhelm is often a sign that a lot is going right. Yes, you heard that correctly. Overwhelm is often a sign that a lot is going right.

That’s a positive. But the problem is that a lot might be happening at the same time.

You’ve likely built what you once wished for, clients, growth, family milestones. But when everything happens at once and there’s no filter, it feels heavy even when it’s all good.

So before I jump into how to shift out of overwhelm fast, let me leave you with this: if you’re not going to worry about it in six months from now, it might not be that important.

This little mental filter has saved me from overreacting to so many things, from tech glitches to unanswered comments to rescheduling a meeting. It’s such a simple question, but it’s helped me zoom out and realize that most things aren’t as urgent as they feel in the moment.

So how do we apply this in real time when life is pulling us in every direction?

Here are five strategies that have made a massive difference for me and the mompreneurs that I coach.

First, single-task like a pro.

Multitasking is tempting, but it drains your focus fast. Train yourself to give full attention to one task at a time, whether that’s writing an email, recording a video, or making lunch for your little one. Be present. It actually speeds you up over the long run.

Second, build time containers.

Carve out intentional time blocks for your business, your family, and your personal recharge time. When you’re with your family, be with them. When you’re working, fully focus on your work. It’s how you reduce guilt and increase presence.

Third, set tech boundaries.

I control my phone, not the other way around. When I start working, I turn on focus mode. During dinner or bath time with my son, my phone is away. Around 8:00 PM I turn on flight mode until after breakfast the next morning. And on top of that, very few apps have notifications turned on.

When I batch-check my inbox instead of reacting every hour, my brain feels so much calmer. So give yourself permission to step away from constant ping mode.

And I’ll be transparent with you. Yes, sometimes I do doom-scroll. It happens to the best of us. Frankly, these apps are built to get our brains on autopilot, not thinking, not creating, just consuming.

So it’s normal that once in a while, especially when we’re tired, we end up sucked into Instagram, LinkedIn, Facebook, whichever, and we just doom-scroll. We’ve all been there. It doesn’t matter. It’s going to happen once in a while. But what matters is that it’s not the norm for us.

Fourth, flip your to-do list into a get-to-do list.

Following the logic that sometimes overwhelm is a good sign, a sign that a lot is going right, I now remind myself: I get to build this business. I get to serve amazing women. I get to be present for my son on my own terms.

This doesn’t erase the hard moments, but it helps me see the opportunity behind the responsibility.

In other words, we’re turning a list of chores into a list of opportunities we have for building our business.

So next time I’m sitting down to batch-create some social media, it won’t be on my to-do list. It’ll be on my get-to-do list. I get to build my presence on social media to better serve the women that I want to work with. I get to do it, and that’s a luxury.

And lastly, fifth, build energy recharging into your workflow.

Self-care isn’t optional, it’s strategic. When you think about it this way, there’s no more guilt about taking a nap or a walk to recharge your batteries in the middle of a workday.

Just this morning during my mastermind call, one of the participants shared that she does a 30-minute walk daily. She goes up the hill next to her house, gets a beautiful view of the lake, and at the same time, during those 30 minutes, she self-reflects, practices gratitude, gets her steps in, and actually frees her mind. She doesn’t bring her phone on those walks. She makes it a point, and I absolutely love this.

So this is just to say, self-care can take different forms, like saying no to an extra project or a dinner invitation, or calling a babysitter so you can have an afternoon to yourself. The key is, don’t wait until you’re burnt out to recharge. Make it part of your routine.

Personally, I like taking a look at my calendar each week and making sure I’ve scheduled one hour of me time. Sometimes it’s personal coaching, a special gym class, or like this week, a massage.

So Boss Mama, overwhelm doesn’t have to be your norm.

If you’re feeling weighed down by endless to-dos and the guilt of not being fully present, you’re not alone. But you can shift this.

Imagine waking up with a clear mind, a plan that aligns with your values, and space to enjoy your family and your business.

To help you get there, I’ve created a free resource called the Mompreneur Reset Guide to help you feel calmer, clearer, and more in control, even on your busiest days. In it, you’ll find the exact exercises I share with my coaching clients and use myself.
